Our Values

Behind the clothes and our love of art & beauty… are our #ValijaValues. They give purpose to what we do and move and inspire us to be better every day.

Self Love

Self Love

From the original sketch to the moment you’re rocking it, when we make your clothes it’s always with YOU on our mind. We believe in owning our bodies and loving everything about them (even the parts you may be insecure about). When you wear Valija you’re letting the world know that there is no other JEVA like you in this world ❤

Women empowerment

Women Empowerment

Women’s voices matter! So, we make sure they are heard. Our management team is 95% women run and the values it holds speak to women’s wants and hearts.

Inclusion

Inclusion

We value inclusivity and community over individuality, and we are proud of having a very diverse group of people in Puerto Rico and abroad making all the magic that happens within our teams come to life in our stores.

Environmental consciousness

Environmental Consciousness

You know those plastic bags that we packaged our clothes in? We finally started to get rid of them. Don’t get us wrong. We loved giving you your items all wrapped up and folded like a gift, but we were clear of how damaging they would become for the environment. We always found ways to reuse them, however, we found a much better alternative: ECOPLAS (a degradable bioplastic made of cassava starch). This material provides an environmentally friendly plastic solution. That way we can provide you with a cute package, without hurting our environment. Our plan is to have all our garments packed in biodegradables by the end of 2021.

Here are some of our other initiatives

Valija gives back

#ValijaGivesBack

Valija has always been a brand that cares about its community. For years, we've been focused on the personal and professional growth of our employees. We have trained our employees to re-use all resources of paper and cartons before recycling. As a team, we visited the Puerto Rican environmental foundation OPAS (Organización Pro Ambiente Sustentable) for a series of talks and workshops. There, not only did we learn how to recycle properly, but we also learned how improper waste management can affect us locally. This reaffirmed our mission to be part of the solution... a sustainable one.

In addition to our various initiatives, we've launched a series of Zero Waste items made from leftover fabrics from our past collections. In the last 10 years we've gone from offering biodegradable bags at checkout counters to recently eliminating all the plastic checkout bags from the stores and offering our very own Solution Bag (a tote bag made of organic cotton, that has been dyed and printed according to environmentally friendly standards). We encourage our #ValijaGirls to bring their own bags so that together, a small action can suddenly have a big impact in our community.

We have joined the #CanopyStyle initiative to end the use of Ancient and Endangered Forests in our rayon and viscose supply.

Canopy Planet

Forests provide a wealth of services, from cleaning the air to water filtration, from storing carbon to providing species habitat. We are proud to announce that we have joined the #CanopyStyle initiative to end the use of Ancient and Endangered Forests in our rayon and viscose supply. Valija will be collaborating with @Canopyplanet and over 170 other global fashion brands on sourcing issues, exploring alternative fibers for viscose production, and forest conservation.

For the years to come, we'll support approaches and systems to build a future that does not use ancient and endangered forests in man-made cellulosic fabrics, including rayon, viscose, lyocell, modal and other trademarked brands.

Wildflower Project. By giving love and care to the Earth, it will give it back.

Wildflower Project

At Valija we believe in the protection of the planet and our environment. Home gardens are a great way to understand that by giving love and care to the Earth, it wil give back. We wanted to bring that connection with the planet to children in our communities. That is why we teamed up with OPAS, to create a contest for public schools where we helped the winning participants (Escuela Central de Artes Visuales and Escuela La Carmen in Maricao) build a school garden. We also provided them with all the tools and materials needed to do so.

 Collections for community

Collections 4 Community

When you wear Valija, not only do you look good, but you are doing good!  With every purchase of our Intention Tees or our ‘Para Todxs’ pride collection, we donate 20% of the proceeds to different organizations.  So far we’ve helped raise funds for different organizations like Taller Salud, OPAS, and Lover Bar.
